Investigating the Relationships between Creativity and Corporate Social (Ir)responsibility: Empirical Studies of U.S. Firms

The thesis was published by Li, He, in January 2023, Rijksuniversiteit Groningen.

Abstract:

Gaining a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between corporate performance in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices and workplace creativity is crucial for both researchers and managers. ESG performance serves as an indicator for both corporate social responsibility (CSR) and corporate social irresponsibility (CSiR), which play significant roles in the development of corporations. Additionally, in the current competitive landscape, creativity and innovation in the workplace are increasingly crucial for enhancing firm performance, achieving success, and ensuring long-term survival. While ESG has been recognized as a driver of innovation, the specific connection between ESG and creativity, which serves as a prerequisite for innovation, remains unclear. Consequently, this dissertation aims to address this research gap and enhance our understanding of the relationship between ESG and creativity. To achieve this objective, we conduct three empirical projects that explore how ESG and creativity mutually influence each other. Chapter 2 focuses on investigating the influence of employee-related CSR and non-employee-related CSR on organizational creativity. Chapter 3 delves into the dark side of CEO creativity, examining how and under what circumstances CEO creativity impacts the likelihood of firms engaging in CSiR activities. Lastly, Chapter 4 examines how firms respond to corporate misconduct by examining whether they select a less creative CEO successor to replace the former CEO as a means of coping with the misconduct. Taken together, this dissertation provides valuable new insights into the intricate relationship between ESG and creativity, contributing to the advancement of our comprehension of this relationship.
