The overall aim of the thesis was to explore oral health challenges in refugees subjected to torture, in order to develop new knowledge that can lay the foundation for a better and more targeted oral health service. A mixed-methods approach was applied.
Reduced oral health was found in refugees in general, with considerate impacts on daily performances. Torture victims were more prone to dental anxiety compared to other refugees, and undergoing dental treatment stood out as especially challenging to individuals suffering from PTSD. Refugee survivors of torture often face oral health challenges that may have implications far beyond the oral cavity. All professionals working with torture victims should know that restoring oral health may contribute significantly to the total rehabilitation process, and oral health should be included in refugee health programs. Furthermore, dental professionals should be aware that patients who present with severe anxiety symptoms in the dental clinic may be victims of trauma. To ensure the rights of torture survivors to rehabilitation and future redress, documentation is of utmost importance – a process in which dental personnel should play a more systematic role.
