Pharmacist services and medication adherence in diabetes care in Indonesia

The thesis was published by Presley, Bobby, in January 2022, Maastricht University.

Abstract:

Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases worldwide, with a high risk of complications and an economic burden to the patients and the healthcare system. Healthcare professionals have a role in diabetes care to optimize medication management and treatment goals, including medication adherence. The high prevalence of medication non-adherence in diabetes care can hinder achieving and maintaining treatment goals. Pharmacists have potential roles in solving this problem by providing pharmacist services. Finding the best-suited pharmacist services that meet patients’ needs can be challenging, especially in low or middle-income countries, where not all pharmacists have the same focus on patient care. This dissertation describes pharmacist services that effectively improve medication adherence and identifies the preferences of patients as users and pharmacists as healthcare providers to integrate and accommodate patients’ needs in the pharmacist services design.
