Lived experiences of cyclone nargis : an analysis of the gendered displacement of Burmese women and men

Abstract:

While climate-induced displacement appears to be on the increase, relatively little is known about the long-term lived experiences of those who are directly impacted by disaster and displacement. This thesis focuses on the lived experiences of displacement resulting from Cyclone Nargis, which struck Myanmar in 2008. It seeks to advance a better understanding of the everyday ruptures generated by the cyclone, as well as of the absorption of, negotiation with, and resistance to these through the daily lives of affected people. The thesis adapts Lefebvre’s work on everyday life and builds on its feminist theorisation as a means to reflect on the experiences of uncertainty and disorder in this context. Specifically, using the rhythm analysis approach, the thesis provides insights from different vantage points regarding the ways in which the survivors reorientate their bodily, social, and emotional rhythms in response to the ruptures introduced by the cyclone into everyday life. Based on the narratives of cyclone survivors, the main argument of this thesis is that the impact of the disaster formulates an ongoing process of reconfiguring post-Nargis everyday life. While illustrating the immediate and destructive dimensions of the cyclone, the thesis thus also sheds light on long-term and habitual aspects of the crisis that become deeply woven into the everyday lives of survivors. Importantly, the thesis also shows how the process of rebuilding everyday life is gendered, not only in the sense of the differentiated impacts and negotiations of women and men, but also in terms that problematise stereotyped gender roles.
