Abstract:

Children’s Picture Books in Translation: ‘The Gruffalo’ in Romance Languages addresses the translation of Children’s Literature (CL), a literary modality traditionally branded as “minor” whose research has not been going on for many years. In its brief history, studies on CL have shifted from an approach where loyalty to the original text prevailed, to one focused on the potential child reader. The peripheral position of CL in the literary system and its usual consideration as instrumental are the main reasons why this type of texts is often manipulated during translation for the most diverse purposes, such as the commercial one (Lathey, 2010: 174), often related to educational norms (Stolt, 1978; O’Sullivan, 2013). Even so, studies on CL coincide in highlighting its many nuances. Indeed, due to the playful and creative use of language that characterizes it, CL often poses greater translational difficulties than literature for adults (Van Coillie & Verschueren, 2006)…
