Abstract:

Background: Feminism has indeed affected the field of music therapy. The interest forthis field started in the early 2000’s, and is still growing. I have always shown greatinterest in this subject, and since feminism in music therapy wasn’t introduced in mytime of schooling, I wanted to further investigate this subject myself. I have a preferencefor interviews and stories told from relevant people, and therefore I wanted to interviewsomeone who had missed feminism in their time of therapy, and one who worked withfeminist music therapy. My research question ended up being “how has feminismaffected music therapy and how can this be described through two interviews from botha therapist and a client, analyzed with thematic coding, according to an ethnographicinquiry?”.Methods: I did two semi-structured interviews – one with a music therapist, who in herown education, felt a lack of the feminist perspective. The other was with a musictherapy teacher, who shares her experience in this field. Both participants were foundonline, one through a social media post by me, and the other by email directly. Theinterviews were transcribed and analyzed with thematic coding ethnographically. Mainpoints were summarized and compared to each other. Results: Both participants share life experiences, of which some are from the late 1990’sand early 2000’s during their own time of music therapy education. Both participantshad felt feminism was missing in the field of music therapy, and both participants seemto have a skeptical view on the psychodynamic method in music therapy. The musictherapy teacher had various examples of feminist issues in both music therapy schoolingand practice. The other participant had examples of feminism lacking in the therapy andin some exam-context included in the music therapy education, and also some otherexamples from other kinds of therapy. Conclusion: Both participants have a skeptical view on psychodynamic music therapy, and stresses the importance of acknowledging the impact by the society surrounding us.Further research could be rich from this point of view, and add to the growing feministdiscussion on a world wide level.
