Knowledge sharing in a community of practice – Employees capabilities for learning
This thesis, which has been drawn up in the spring of 2021 by Anna Vire Johansen, will uncover how knowledge sharing is affecting the learning capabilities of the employees of the Danish Zoo Aalborg Zoo. This has been done through a qualitative approach by interviewing two zookeepers in a group interview and interviewing three information employees in a focus group interview. Both interviews have been executed with medium involvement of the moderator. Additional to inter-viewing zookeepers and information employees the empiricism has also been gathered from documents such as minutes of meetings and employment contracts. Key sources in the analysis are Knud Illeris’ (2017b) theory of the three dimensions of learning called the dimension for content, the dimension for drive, and the dimension for interaction, Étienne Wenger’s (1998/2008) theory concerning communities of practice, as well as Peter Jarvis’ (2017; 1987) theory of non-learning. In analyzing of the gathered empiricism three research questions have been posed. Through the first research question, it will be analyzed how knowledge sharing among the zookeepers, among the information employees along with the knowledge sharing between Aalborg Zoo and the zookeepers and between Aalborg Zoo and the information employees will affect the dimension for content. Through the second research question it will be analyzed how knowledge sharing in Aalborg Zoo affects the dimension for drive of the zookeepers and the information employees. The third research question will then analyze how interaction and knowledge sharing among zookeepers and information employees during the program called Zooskole affects the dimension for content along with the dimension for drive. The thesis concludes that the way and frequency of knowledge sharing is of great importance for how and to what extent the permanent staff and the hourly paid employees will become familiar with each other, the practice, and the community. Furthermore, the thesis concludes that knowledge sharing is of great importance as to in what extent the employees will become comfortable and confident in their work and interaction both with other employees and with the management. The thesis concludes that regular interaction and knowledge sharing among the employees and between Aalborg Zoo and the employees will have a positive influence on the employees’ capabilities of learning.
