This dissertation aims to tackle a translation found in a manuscript by János Körmöczi, bearing
the title Fürstbürger Phosphorus… Throughout the research, it was possible to determine the
author of the original German text, who was Johann Friedrich Ernst Albrecht. During the
translation process, Körmöczi strove for completeness, but he was unable to do so perfectly in
every case; his interpretation is characterized by a multitude of Latinisms, simplifications and
abbreviations. The aim of this translation was certainly to direct his students – who were already
exposed to an increasing number of radical texts – to a possible natural, yet non-atheist, religion
in a classroom setting. The German text cites a multitude of important contemporary authors in
the notes; most notable ones are the works of Christian Ernst Wünsch and Constantin-François
Volney, as well as the works of Karl Friedrich Bahrdt. In addition to comparing the marked
texts of these authors with the work examined in the thesis, I placed the original German text
in the tradition of the literature of the moon journey, and in terms of genre, it could be classified
among the Menippian satires. The translation was also an important moment in the translator’s
oeuvre, as his earlier readings and speeches are also connected to what was said in the
Fürstbürger Phosphorus. My dissertation, although can be considered more like the basis of a
future elaborate research, tried to place a text and translation that was less known until now, not
only in the Hungarian, but also in the European literary canon.
