Operational Strategies for Wind Farms under Extreme Wind Conditions
Control strategies for shutting down windturbines are essential to improve the reliabilityof offshore wind energy under extremewind conditions, which are expectedto become more frequent in the North Seaarea. The main objective of this thesisis to investigate and verify operationalstorm strategies for offshore wind farms. These strategies involve coordinated shutdownsof wind turbines to avoid disturbancein the utility grids. The proposedstorm strategies are tested using a MATLABSimulink wind farm model based onthe Horns Rev I wind farm. The shutdownperformance is tested with severalproposed wind profiles to evaluate its correctoperation in different meteorologicalconditions. The power and voltage responsesresulting from different shutdownprocedures are thoroughly analyzed anddiscussed to determine the optimal shutdownstrategy for the specific case study. The chosen strategy aims to strike a balancebetween achieving a rapid shutdownof the entire wind farm, minimizing voltagedrops, and ensuring a smooth transitionto the idle state.
