Abstract:

This study explores the relationship between religion and democracy. It claims that religions can positively contribute to democracy from within their orthodox stance. There are two main problem this study tries to solve. One is the contradiction between the ‘sovereignty of God’ and the ‘sovereignty of the people’. The other is the contradiction between the ‘truth-claim’ of religion and ‘plurality and diversity’, in which democracy functions. In discussing the protestant tradition, Roman Catholicism, and Islam, both Sunni & Shiite, this study shows that religious traditions can not only support democracy, but also the basis of democracy are of religious roots, especially the limitation of the State power and the freedom of conscious.
