Abstract:

Beside the fact that it represents artistic performing form, circuses are also the representatives of cultural buildings. Stationary circuses were built through history and their future is unpredictable but we should do the today`s retrospective of existence of these buildings. Architecture has always been neglected comparing to circus spectacles but in fact the buildings constructed in the past for the purpose of this art are solidly standing even in modern times. Long time ago, a great influence was given to circus performances but the places in which were performed remained insignificantly analized.Regional areas in this work includes Europe that, as a separated continent, has its own specific characteristics but also cultural identities. The continent survived turbulent historical and territorial changes, from the ancient era until now, which influenced on all life spheres on the continent and, at the same time on the circus performance. As a contribution to this PhD dissertation, we explore the beginning and the changes that followed circus buildings up to these days. Firstly, the focus is on defining the fenomen of a circus from different perspectives, from the circus as a kind of art and spectacle to defining the buildings with this specific purpose. As a retrospective of the whole situation, the review of circus buildings through centuries was made. At this point, we come to the final goal where we can see today`s problems of these structures. The situation has changed a lot now. There are a lot of difficulties and problems for their survival. The constructions are of huge dimensions but the purpose has been disappearing in great number of countries on this continent. In the PhD dissertation, the typological classification is shown of the up-to-date condition of circus buildings in this region. This kind of architecture is now transforming and adapting to modern era in different ways. Mostly they are reconstructed by implementing additional functions or their usage is completely changing. The research in this work has shown the developing path of circus buildings. What is important, do they still exist in Europe, with smaller or bigger architectural changes? Russia is the country which can still be proud of great number of buildings of this kind but even in Russia there are certain problems. In the rest of the continent, the struggle for existence of circus buildings is continuing but they will (even with the changed purposes) always remain the part of cultural memory that testify about the need of society for that kind of entertainment which is now generally going into oblivion.
