The aim of this thesis is to gain more knowledge about the multifactorial and multidisciplinary approach to urinary problems in older men, with specific attention to co-morbidity. This research describes the time-dependent relationships between the occurrence of urinary problems in older men and erectile dysfunction, as well as the relationship with cardiovascular diseases. The GP gets an increasingly important role in the preventive care. If a causal relation is found between urinary problems and cardiovascular disease, diagnosing urinary problems is useful to the timely detection of men with increased risk of heart disease. This research has focused on the primary care patient population. It used data from the Registration Network Groningen and a large open population study. This concerned large groups of male patients, where data have been collected for several years. Men with urinary problems were more likely to have erectile dysfunction and cardiovascular diseases. Over a longer time frame and after adjusting for confounding factors, the relationship between urinary problems and erectile dysfunction remained significant. However, the relationship between urinary problems and cardiovascular diseases was no longer present. We concluded that there is a time-dependent relationship between urinary problems and erectile dysfunction. No causal link was found between urinary problems and cardiovascular diseases, not in the primary care-, or in the open population. It is recommended to inform patients about the occurrence of erectile dysfunction in men with urinary problems can be discussed, but it is not necessary to screen men with urinary problems in the context of cardiovascular risk management.
