We used a systematic literature review, analyses of observed data and microsimulation models to contribute to the improvement of cervical cancer prevention in the first three steps of the health policy cycle: monitoring, evaluation and barriers. We showed that current cervical cancer screening programmes reduce cervical cancer mortality and we quantified the effects of potential improvements to those programmes, taking into account HPV vaccination effects and existing barriers.
