Abstract:

Eelgrass is a foundation species in Danish waters, butsince 1900 more than 2/3 have been lost. In recentyears, efforts to restore these ecosystems through eel-grass transplanting have been gaining traction. How-ever, the social dynamics and system around andwithin eelgrass transplanting remain widely unsur-veyed. This thesis aims to map the social dynam-ics in eelgrass transplanting through a case studyof the transplanting in Gamborg Fjord. The so-cial dynamics are understood through a Multi-level-perspective of transition theory. Where Discoursetheory is utilised to understand the motives behindthe practitioner’s engagement in transplanting eel-grass within the socio-technical landscape. And so-cial and socio-ecological networks form the niche ofeelgrass transplanting practices. For eelgrass trans-planting to become an established and viable prac-tice, it has to enter into the system of the socio-technical regime. In entering the regime, challengesand opportunities arise.Eelgrass transplanting is driven by motives of enhanc-ing biodiversity, compensating for carbon emissionsand gaining knowledge of the ecosystem dynamicsand services. However, poor ecological conditions re-strict eelgrass transplanting, and barriers arise due tohigh costs, administration of ecosystem services and aneed for authorisation. Utilising voluntary labour canreduce costs and increase awareness amongst volun-teers while introducing new variables into the trans-planting practice. Accrediting the ecosystem servicesto the practitioners can incentives municipalities andorganisations to engage in the practice of eelgrasstransplanting. There is, however, an underlying needto tackle the poor ecological conditions for eelgrasstransplanting to become a success.
