Abstract:

This thesis examines how students with mental difficulties who receive special educational support (SPS) experience the demands of the performance society at their studies and how these demands affect their performance and well-being. The students study various professional bachelor programmes at University College Lillebælt in Odense. Based on theories about modern society, the thesis examines which types of requirements that make it difficult for students with mental disabilities who receive SPS to follow the course of studies and how this affects their performance and well-being. In addition, the thesis examines which special challenges the students have and how they experience the help and support they receive through SPS. Finally, the thesis examines how social work, through SPS, can support the students’ ability to master challenges in relation to their studies.The study is based on 6 qualitative interviews with students and 1 qualitative interview with a professional SPS teacher at University College Lillebælt in Odense.With this study, it is demonstrated that students with mental disabilities are severely pressured by the demands of the performance society. Therefore, they can be considered double vulnerable and are under extreme pressure in their student life. Students with mental disabilities need structure, predictability, and continuity, and it is particularly difficult for them to live up to the performance society’s demands to be flexible and ready to adapt. They turn defeats and frustrations inward and blame themselves for not being able to live up to societies and their own expectations.The study has also shown that the students are, among other things, challenged by illegitimate study activities and regard their mental impairments as a study job, which they have alongside their studies. It is concluded that stable and continuous SPS courses help and support the students in creating a better balance in their course of study. When the students are under pressure due to a lack of time and energy, they opt out of SPS and therefore do not get the support they need. The study has shown that the students need breaks to recover, but that the current SPS effort is not sufficient to ensure their needs.
