Architectural meanings are the subject of research because of their significance both for the theory of architecture and its experience. Except in the process of architectural experience, which is followed by the process of attributing meanings, the significance of architectural meanings is also reflected in their role of basic units of architectural communication. However, the semiotic approach, characteristic of the discourse on communications in architecture, is not applied in this thesis, but the meanings are examined in the light of the complexity of the phenomena and its nature. The complexity of architectural meanings is indicated by defining their characteristics: stratification; openness to influences; dynamism and referentiality. Those characteristics are examined within the case study through analysis of the units and systems of meanings attributed to the selected museum objects; they were confirmed and general conclusions were drawn. It has been demonstrated that architectural meanings are a complex phenomenon, inseparable from architectural experience and architectural mental image, open to internal and external influences, dynamic and changeable, with the variety of complex and multiple references related to the object of architecture, as well as other systems of symbolization and signification. The initial hypotheses concerning the complexity of the nature of architectural meanings, definition and confirmation of their characteristics, examination of their roles in the processes of architectural communication, architectural experience and formation of architectural mental image, and the active role of the object in the communication process, are tested and confirmed. As a specific result of this research, the space of potentially positive influence on meanings is defined through enhancing object interpretability.
